A chair is the hardest-working piece of furniture in a restaurant. It absorbs dozens of seatings a day, aggressive cleaning chemicals and constant dragging across the floor. That is why restaurant and cafe chairs should be chosen by frame construction, foam density and upholstery abrasion rating rather than by looks alone.
How to choose chairs for a restaurant or cafe
Start with turnover. High-traffic venues — fast food, food courts, canteens — need metal or beech frames with welded reinforcement and upholstery rated above 40,000 Martindale cycles. Mid and premium restaurants, where guests linger, need seating comfort: 45–48 cm seat depth, foam density of at least 30 kg/m³ and lumbar support in the backrest.
Upholstery matters next. Faux leather and vinyl are the easiest to clean and behave best near open kitchens and family areas. Boucle and chenille look richer but need anti-stain treatment. Terraces require moisture-resistant upholstery over quick-dry foam.
Finally, match the chair to the table. A standard dining chair sits 45–47 cm high against a 74–76 cm tabletop. Bar counters of 105–110 cm need stools with a 75–80 cm seat height. A five-centimetre error makes seating uncomfortable and cannot be fixed after delivery.
