How to Choose Bar Stools: Counter and Seat Height, Footrest, Materials

A bar stool seat should be 25–30 cm below the counter top: a 100–110 cm bar needs a 72–80 cm stool, a 90–95 cm counter a 62–67 cm stool. Footrest height, spacing between stools and materials.

Choose bar stool height by the counter: the seat should be 25–30 cm below the top. A classic 100–110 cm bar needs a seat height of 72–80 cm, a 90–95 cm counter needs a 62–67 cm counter stool, and a tall 115–120 cm bar needs 82–87 cm. Allow about 60 cm of counter length per stool, and place the footrest roughly 45–50 cm below the seat.

Which bar stool height fits your counter?

The main mistake is buying a “standard” bar stool without measuring the counter. Counters vary, and a 10 cm difference turns a comfortable seat into an awkward one: either the guest’s knees hit the top, or they sit with raised shoulders like a child at an adult table. Measure from the floor to the top of the counter and subtract 25–30 cm — that is your seat height. Remember that a padded seat compresses by 1–2 cm, so for upholstered models aim for the upper end of the range.

How high should the footrest be?

The footrest is what separates a comfortable bar stool from an uncomfortable one — the guest’s feet should not dangle. Aim for a footrest about 45–50 cm below the seat, so the knee is bent at roughly a right angle. For a 75 cm seat that is 25–30 cm from the floor; for a 65 cm counter stool, about 20 cm. A ring footrest suits swivel stools, a crossbar suits four-legged stools. The footrest takes the guest’s weight every time they climb on, so it must be welded or securely bolted and faced with metal — wood and paint on a footrest wear first. If the counter has its own foot rail, it is usually fitted 20–25 cm above the floor.

How many bar stools fit along a counter?

Allow 60 cm of counter per stool (seat centre to seat centre); 65–70 cm for wide, swivel or armrest models. Simply divide the counter length in centimetres by 60: a 3 m counter takes 5 stools, a 4.2 m counter 7 stools. Leave a 25–30 cm overhang under the top for knees, otherwise guests sit sideways. Behind the guests keep an aisle of at least 90–120 cm if waiters pass there.

Do you need a backrest and a swivel seat?

A stool with a backrest is more comfortable when guests stay longer than half an hour — in a bar, a restaurant with counter seating, a wine or cigar room. A backless stool takes less space, tucks under the counter and suits coffee shops, juice bars and quick-service formats. A low back is a compromise: lumbar support without blocking the view. A swivel seat makes it easier to sit down between closely spaced stools, but the mechanism is one more part that must be well made — ask the supplier for its rated load and warranty. Armrests are pleasant in lounge bars but increase the spacing.

Which materials work for bar stools?

Bar stools work harder than dining chairs: guests climb on, jump off and rock them. Frame: powder-coated metal or solid beech; metal frames handle side loads on tall legs better. Upholstery: faux leather — spilled drinks and handprints wipe off easily; fabric only if water-repellent, in dark tones and rated 40,000+ Martindale cycles. For terraces and pool bars use outdoor materials: aluminium, UV-stabilised polypropylene. Check the leg glides: tiles and porcelain stoneware need plastic or felt caps, otherwise stools scratch the floor and make noise.

How to test a bar stool before buying?

Sit on the model at a counter of the right height — in a showroom or with a sample. Check five things: is it easy to put a foot on the footrest and get up; does the stool rock when you lean forward or sideways; are there sharp edges or protruding screws; does the seat bottom out under weight; does the actual seat height match the stated one (padded models can differ by 1–2 cm). Always compare the upholstery with the sample in daylight.
